This week, the ESL Tutoring Services blog will be featuring Georgina, who has been on the Sydney ESL teaching team for over a year and will also be one of our regular ESL blog contributors. Georgina is a highly dedicated, professional, experienced and much liked tutor. Georgina has successfully tutored individuals from all walks of life, including those with basic English who need help in their day to day interactions, to clients who need to pass their IELTS exam, and corporate clients (such as Fujitsu and Harvey Norman) who need assistance with their professional writing and Business English.
What inspired you to become an English tutor?
I have always enjoyed working with people and spent many years working in HR in both the private and public sectors and also teaching HR to undergraduates both here and overseas. I spent some time wondering where the next phase of my career would take me. English tutoring seemed ideal as it built on my existing HR experience but also challenged me to expand my knowledge into a brand new field. I can honestly say it’s the best decision I have ever made. I haven’t looked back!!
What ongoing learning have you been doing to help the students you tutor?
On a professional level I have completed the CELTA course and have also trained in IELTS. Recently with the move to online learning platforms, I have also been looking at ways to make lessons more genuine and interactive using the various technologies available for teaching.
Day to day I am constantly looking at interesting and innovative ways of presenting the English language to clients. How do I make the present perfect verb tense interesting? How do I help clients with their pronunciation? Where can I source reading materials that will appeal to my clients? Can grammar be fun? I am constantly sourcing and incorporating new and interesting materials to lessons and I also encourage clients to bring their own examples to lessons to work on.
Outside of tutoring, what are your favourite past times?
I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I am quite a social person so catching up with friends is always a favourite pastime. I also enjoy cooking for my family and friends.
Exercise is also important - there are many beautiful walking trails where I live. I try to get out to enjoy them at every opportunity.

What is your favourite part about working with ESL Tutoring?
It’s a great team at ESL Tutoring and I feel very supported in my role as a tutor. Hands down the best part of my job is the clients I meet. People from all parts of the world, some of whom I now consider to be friends, trust me to help them improve their English language skills. I take that very seriously and work very hard to help them meet their goals. It is very rewarding and I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to help them.
